Trump on North Korea denuclearization deal: 'Maybe it won't get made'

Donald Trump spoke with Sean Hannity in Hanoi, Vietnam, on Thursday after his summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un came to an abrupt end. Trump claimed that Kim asked for all sanctions on his country to be lifted in exchange for only partial denuclearization, while North Korea’s foreign minister Ri Yong Ho disputed that claim, saying that Kim only asked for partial sanctions relief. Whatever the reason he and Kim couldn’t reach an agreement, Trump said he remains hopeful, but admitted that a deal may not happen.

“It’s a much tougher deal to make. Maybe it won’t get made, but that’s the deal that we should have, and you can’t give up everything if you don’t get that,” Trump said. “And we could have done large portions, but you’re not getting that. So we’ll see what happens.”

Trump made bold declarations about the denuclearization of North Korea following his first summit with Kim in Singapore last June, but this time around, with no deal or even tentative agreement reached, Trump struck a much different tone. In fact, Trump said he understands why he and Kim couldn’t come to an understanding.

“I didn’t want to give up the sanctions unless we had a real program, and they’re not ready for that, and I understand that fully. I really do,” Trump said. “I mean, they spent a lot of time building it.”

Hannity airs weeknights at 9 p.m. on Fox News.
