The Baltimore home of House Oversight Committee Chairman Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) was robbed early Saturday morning, a police report released Thursday revealed. On Friday morning, President Trump mocked Cummings over the incident.
“Really bad news!” the president tweeted sarcastically. “The Baltimore house of Elijah Cummings was robbed. Too bad!”

Really bad news! The Baltimore house of Elijah Cummings was robbed. Too bad!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) August 2, 2019
Hours after the robbery took place last Saturday, Trump lashed out at Cummings on Twitter, writing that his district in Baltimore is a “disgusting, rat and rodent infested mess” and that “no human being would want to live there.” That attacks seemed to be in response to a Fox News segment the president was watching about Cummings’ criticism of the conditions at the southern border, as well as his efforts as Oversight Committee chairman to investigate the president and his administration. (On Monday, the committee released a damning report about Trump World’s relationship with Saudi Arabia.)
Trump continued to attack Cummings and the city of Baltimore throughout the week, while at the same time vehemently but inaccurately denying he is a racist. His most recent attacks against the city came Thursday night during a rally in Cincinnati, Ohio. After the president listed several countries he claimed have a lower crime rate than Baltimore, he asked the crowd to “give me a place.” Someone shouted Afghanistan. “I believe it’s higher than Afghanistan,” Trump said. “We’ll check the numbers and if they’re wrong they’ll tell us tomorrow … I do believe the rate is higher than Afghanistan.”
“Gimme a place,” he says.
Then the laughter from the crowd.
As someone who has covered murder in Baltimore for years, sat w/ mourning mothers, fathers, siblings, grandmothers and girlfriends, this video is quite literally nauseating.
I don’t know what to do w/ this feeling. https://t.co/LNClOlNvgZ

Baltimore’s homicide rate is indeed higher than that of Afghanistan. Of course, this doesn’t include those who have died there in war.
