‘True Detective’ Season 4 Trailer: Jodie Foster Unearths Murder Beneath the Ice

January brings a chill in the air — and to Max — with Season 4 of the crime drama series “True Detective.”

Jodie Foster and Kali Reis join the ranks of previous case solvers like Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson, Mahershala Ali, Taylor Kitsch, Colin Farrell, and Rachel McAdams with the latest season, set in the frigid darkness of Alaska, and where the sun literally never shines. Issa López serves as showrunner, writer, and director of all episodes, making this the first season without original series creator Nic Pizzolatto in the driver’s seat. He is on board as an executive producer, though taking a passive creative role this time.

This season is officially dubbed “Night Country.” When the long winter night falls in Ennis, Alaska, the eight men who operate the Tsalal Arctic Research Station vanish without a trace. To solve the case, Detectives Liz Danvers (Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Reis) will have to confront the darkness they carry in themselves and dig into the haunted truths that lie buried under the eternal ice.

While Foster has directed episodes of “Black Mirror,” “Orange Is the New Black,” and “House of Cards,” she hasn’t been in front of a camera on small screens in years. This season of “True Detective” seems to put her back in a place similar to Clarice Starling, the role that won her the Academy Award for Best Actress in 1992 for “The Silence of the Lambs.” (This was her second win after “The Accused.”) She’s in the Oscar conversation again this year for her role in “Nyad” opposite Annette Bening.

“True Detective” last ran in 2019 with a Mahershala Ali-led Season 3 that put the series back in the good graces of most critics after a heavy-handed Season 2, set around the industrial waste-scapes of downtown Los Angeles, lost many viewers.
