True Detective” will return.

Just days after “True Detective: Night Country” ended its mostly acclaimed and widely viewed season, HBO announced it had renewed the popular franchise for a fifth installment with “Night Country” showrunner Issa Lopez back as the creative mastermind.

“Issa Lopez is that one-of-a-kind, rare talent that speaks directly to HBO’s creative spirit. She helmed ‘True Detective: Night Country’ from start to finish, never once faltering from her own commendable vision, and inspiring us with her resilience both on the page and behind the camera,” said Francesca Orsi, executive vice president of HBO Programming and head of HBO Drama Series and Films. “Alongside Jodie [Foster] and Kali [Reis]’s impeccable performances, she’s made this installation of the franchise a massive success, we are so lucky to have her as part of our family.”

“From conception to release, ‘Night Country’ has been the most beautiful collaboration and adventure of my entire creative life,” Lopez said in a statement of her own. “HBO trusted my vision all the way, and the idea of bringing to life a new incarnation of ‘True Detective’ with Casey [Bloys], Francesca, and the whole team is a dream come true. I can’t wait to go again.”

According to HBO, “True Detective: Night Country” was watched by a franchise-best 12.7 million “cross-platform viewers.” The show is also an early top contender in the Best Limited Series categories at the 2024 Emmys.

“True Detective: Night Country” debuted in January and focused on a murder conspiracy in Ennis, Alaska. “When the long winter night falls in Ennis, Alaska, the eight men who operate the Tsalal Arctic Research Station vanish without a trace. To solve the case, detectives Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis) will have to confront the darkness they carry in themselves, and dig into the haunted truths that lie buried under the eternal ice,” read a synopsis.

While reviews of the “True Detective” relaunch were strong, not everyone was a fan of Lopez’s work, including “True Detective” creator Nic Pizzolatto. The three-time Emmy Award nominee – who wrote or co-wrote the show’s first three seasons, including the acclaimed first entry with Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey in lead roles – had distanced himself from “Night Country” and reshared critical posts about the episodes on his Instagram page. (Pizzolatto remains credited as executive producer of “True Detective” despite having not contributed creatively to the new season.)

“I believe that every storyteller has a very specific, peculiar, and unique relation to the stories they create, and whatever his reactions are, he’s entitled to them. That’s his prerogative,” López told Vulture in an interview when asked about Pizzolatto’s critiques. “I wrote this with profound love for the work he made and love for the people that loved it. And it is a reinvention, and it is different, and it’s done with the idea of sitting down around the fire, and [let’s] have some fun and have some feelings and have some thoughts. And anybody that wants to join is welcome.”
