Trubisky time: Bears will start rookie Mitch Trubisky in Week 5

Mike Glennon thought he’d get the season as Chicago Bears quarterback. He got four games.

After a poor performance in a blowout loss at the Green Bay Packers, the Bears are making the move everyone knew was inevitable: They’re giving Mitch Trubisky his first career start. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported the news. It might have been smart for the Bears to get Trubisky some snaps in last Thursday’s blowout, but it’s not the first time the coaching staff hasn’t been too forward thinking with the rookie.

Glennon now becomes a very expensive backup. He got a three-year, $45 million deal in the offseason, though the Bears can get out of that without much cap punishment after this season. And they probably will move on, considering Trubisky is the future.

Trubisky was the second pick of the draft, and looked great in the preseason. One reason Trubisky didn’t start the season is he had just 13 career starts in college, so he might have needed more time. Another reason is Bears coach John Fox isn’t the most creative coach in the NFL. But even he had to realize Trubisky would give the team more hope moving forward.

Glennon had four touchdowns and five interceptions in his four starts. He threw a couple picks in the Packers game, and at that point it seemed like a quarterback change would happen sooner rather than later. There was still a question if old-school Fox would actually make the move, but he did it. Trubisky will start against a tough Minnesota Vikings defense this week.

With this move, the Bears become a much more interesting team for the rest of the season.
