"I'm living out this fantasy that I've had my entire life, really," Sivan tells PEOPLE of his third album 'Something to Give Each Other'

Many adult life experiences led Troye Sivan to make his liberated new album Something to Give Each Other and for that he's grateful.

"I think I'm going to look back on this album and this time in my life with such fondness," Sivan tells PEOPLE at Spotify's early listening party for the LP – which dropped Friday — in partnership with its GLOW initiative at Outer Heaven in New York City.

Since the Australian pop star officially hit the music scene in 2014, listeners have learned about his love life and emotions through his albums Blue Neighborhood and Bloom. But the new, 10-track record is easily his most personal, providing insight on a series of sexual encounters Sivan partook in following the end of his last long-term relationship.

Despite getting more vulnerable than ever one the new songs, Sivan felt the writing process came to him naturally. "I can look back on my life in these albums almost as journals from a specific time period, and this album is reflective of where I've been for the last couple years," he explains. "It's nice to be able to look back and be like, 'Oh, I guess the last couple years have been really joyous and full of a lot of love in many different forms.' It didn't really take that much thought, to be honest."

Earlier this year, Sivan launched into the Something to Give Each Other era with its lead single "Rush," a sexually-charged dance-pop track released alongside a music video set at an erotic Berlin party — complete with nudity, make-out sessions and the singer peering through a glory hole. He's since stripped down in a steam room in the video for its second single "Got Me Started" and dressed as a woman to give Ross Lynch a lap dance in its third visual, "One of Your Girls."

Unabashed queerness has come further into mainstream music over the past few years, thanks to racy hits like Lil Nas X's "MONTERO (Call Me by Your Name)" and Sam Smith's "Unholy" with Kim Petras, which perhaps inspired Sivan's confidence with his new material. He didn't feel any nerves regarding its sensual nature, rightfully so, as his largely LGBTQ+ fans immediately embraced it.

"From writing the album to making the visuals to releasing it, everything has just been a lot more fun," he says. "Maybe because it's my third time doing it, I feel a little bit more relaxed."

Another reason for Sivan's comfort around sharing Something to Give Each Other? Its elements of sexual and romantic freedom remain reflective of his life at the moment, even after its release. "I'm just working more because we're putting the album out — that's the only difference," he quips. "I'm still very much in all of the themes of the album, feeling really connected with myself and with other people and open to the world."

Part of why Sivan's supporters are quick to get excited about each development in the adult phase of his music career is because they've been following his journey since he came out as gay on YouTube in 2013. He'll never forget that part of their connection, as he still looks back on those years to inspire his artistry.

"I definitely think I made this album for that young version of me, probably even younger, maybe when I was 7," says Sivan, who was inspired by "mega pop stars" like Janet Jackson, Madonna and Britney Spears growing up. "I wanted to be a singer so bad."

He recalls getting especially reflective while filming the "Got Me Started" video. "When I'm dancing on a rooftop in Bangkok with 30 dancers in a disco suit, I will giggle to myself because I'm like, 'Oh my God, if baby me could see.' It really is for him," explains Sivan. "I'm living out this fantasy that I've had my entire life, really. I think he'd be very excited and proud."
