Troye Sivan Reveals 'Making Moms Cry' Used to Be His 'Barometer' for a Successful Performance

"I was, like, you know, smiling at the camera, like doing whatever to win these moms over… And it worked," Sivan said

Troye Sivan is revealing how he used to measure success.

The “Angel Baby” singer, 28, said on the latest episode of The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon that when he was younger, he used to have a special way of figuring out whether a performance went well.

“At the time, my barometer for a successful performance was making moms cry,” Sivan admitted on the show. “That was always my biggest goal, and if I did that, then I thought it was a successful performance.”

“You would tug at the heartstrings?,” host Jimmy Fallon asked, to which the singer replied, “Try to, yeah.”

Sivan noted that he would purposefully do things in his performance as a kid to capture the hearts of moms watching.

“I would lay it on so thick,” he teased. “I was, like, you know, smiling at the camera, like doing whatever to win these moms over… And it worked. It worked.”

Fallon said that they found a clip of the young singer making his Australian television debut at 11-years-old while singing “Over the Rainbow.” In the short video, Sivan could be seen using his signature moves, smiling brightly at the camera with his big dimples for show and he would stare cutely at the camera as he sang.

“You’re making me cry a little bit,” Fallon joked while sniffling back fake tears. “You’re making me cry.”

The appearance comes ahead of the release of his third studio album Something to Give Each Other, which is his first album since 2018, as well as the release of his music video "Rush.” The project is described in a press release as "a celebration of sex, dance, sweat, community, queerness, love and friendship.”

In July, Sivan received backlash for his "Rush" music video for not featuring a variety of body types, to which he responded, “I definitely hear the critique.”

“To be honest, it just wasn’t a thought we had — we obviously weren’t saying, ‘We want to have one specific type of person in the video,’ “ he told Billboard. “We just made the video, and there wasn’t a ton of thought put behind that.”

The pop star gave fans a status update about his forthcoming project on Instagram in June teasing the project with a series of videos. "It’s not lost on me that some of you guys have been following along since i was the kid w the stye in my eye in that first video," he wrote in a caption. "Btw — I didn’t mean to take 5 years to make this album."
