Troye Sivan gagged everyone with his video for “One of Your Girls,” which had him in full femme pop star glam. Now, he’s opening up about how the experience has expanded his personal idea of manhood, as the first cover boy for HommeGirls.

The clothing brand is known for its femme approach to menswear, and its cover shoots with the likes of boygenius, Zaya Wade, Kylie Jenner, and more. That makes the “Rush” singer the bi-annual style magazine’s first “Hommeboy” — a fitting choice for a pop star whose oeuvre is all about playing with gendered signifiers. On one of the two variant covers, both shot by Michael Bailey-Gates and styled by Stella Greenspan, Sivan is wearing a cropped pink shirt and denim hot pants by Duran Lantik, paired with a pair of vintage Manolo Blahnik pumps, according to HommeGirls’ Instagram. On the other cover, he’s wearing a Willy Chavarria leather jacket and lipstick, in a real androgynous Matrix-esque moment. Trans model Alex Consani, who shot to fame over the last year thanks to her irreverent social media presence, conducts the interview.

The rest of the images in the shoot similarly put a twist on ’90s menswear and womenswear looks. In one, Sivan stands next to a streetlight wearing a plain white tank and hoisting a white skirt around his hips, vaguely recalling Carrie Bradshaw’s various tulle looks. In another, the singer stands shirtless in a power pose, waist snatched with a black corset, topping it off with a pair of pinstriped trousers.

In the interview, Consani asked Sivan if he would call this “a more femme photo shoot,” to which he replied, “I honestly do it all. I’ve totally thrown away any sort of expectations as far as what feels right.”

Though the singer always understood that other people should have the freedom to wear and do what they want, it took until the “One of Your Girls” video for him to apply that principle to himself. “I was just like, oh, wait, this feels so good to me in a different way, just genuine,” Sivan said. “I enjoy playing and I’m having so much fun with it.”

The singer added that somewhat ironically, giving himself permission to explore different gender presentations expanded his idea of what it means to be a man, which he’s “really proud of.”

“I want to lead by example. Like I said, it’s the same thing when you grant other people the grace of loving their body or knowing they’re beautiful, we provide more patience to others than we do sometimes for ourselves,” he said. “I am proud of myself this year for being more patient with myself and allowing myself to just be me. It’s sort of funny to me that the accolades have followed.” (In addition to being the first Hommeboy, Sivan was also named one of GQ Australia’s Men of the Year in 2023, and earned his first Grammy nominations for Best Dance Pop Recording and Best Music Video, both for “Rush.”)

Sadly, the interview didn’t come with any news about potential U.S. tour dates for the singer, but Sivan will be hitting the road in Europe starting next month, kicking off the Something to Give Each Other tour in Lisbon, Portugal, and making his way across the continent, ending with a date in Birmingham on June 28.
