Trista Sutter has some words of wisdom for Gerry Turner.

The former reality star — who made history as the first Bachelorette in 2003 — is offering her expert advice to the Golden Bachelor as he prepares to marry fiancée Theresa Nist in a live televised wedding on ABC in January. Sutter, 51, famously married her husband Ryan Sutter on TV 20 years ago after the pair got engaged on the series, so she's in a unique position to give Turner, 71, some of her best been-there, done-that tips.

Sutter told E! News that, above all else, Turner and Nist, 70, should "just enjoy it."

"Weddings are stressful, and weddings on television are even more stressful. So as long as you are focused on each other and come with intention, they're gonna be great," she said while attending the KIIS-FM iHeartRadio Jingle Ball on Friday.

Sutter also was a source of advice for Turner amid his journey to finding love with Nist. She joined the former restauranteur and some of the contestants on a pickleball date in the season's fourth episode, and had an opportunity to offer some counsel to Turner at a difficult moment.

"He was struggling a little bit, just 'I don't know what to do,'" Sutter recalled to E! News. "And I said, 'You need to find the person not necessarily that you can live with — of course you wanna find somebody that you can live with — but you need to find the person that you can't live without."

Sutter said it was the very same advice she was given two decades ago when she embarked on her own Bachelorette experience.

Sutter also shared her thoughts on who should be crowned the first Golden Bachelorette. She believes runner-up Leslie Fhima should have her moment in the spotlight after Turner sent her home during the finale on Nov. 30.

"She deserves her redemption story," said Sutter, who herself was a runner-up on the 2002 inaugural season of The Bachelor, starring Alex Michel.

"I was saying throughout the season that I wanted Joan to be the Golden Bachelorette because she didn't get to complete her time there….And I love her. I met her last night," she continued. "But I love Leslie, too. I met her at the pickle ball date. I think that everyone is going to rally around her if they sign her up for it, and we'll all be rooting for her."

With their much-anticipated wedding just a month away, Turner and Nist recently spoke to PEOPLE about their vision for their special day. Nist said her daughter has enthusiastically jumped in to help the couple with the planning.

“My daughter, she's seen a million weddings and she is incredible. She's put together the vision board," Nist said. "She's asking me, ‘Do you like this? Do you like this?’ And I go, ‘Wow, okay, I don't even have to do this. This is awesome.’ She's handling it pretty much.”

Turner is happily letting the mother-daughter duo take the reins while he simply enjoys seeing how much Nist is reveling in the experience.

“I can just hear the joy in her voice when I talk to her and she's talking about whether it's a dress or a cake or flowers or whatever it is,” he told PEOPLE. “It makes me so happy that she's having this much of a good time with it. It's like, what could be more fun?”

He said he has complete confidence in Nist that the wedding will be an affair to remember. “I haven't seen anything that wouldn't work. It's going to be spectacular," he declared.
