Trick or treat! When costumed kids can go candy collecting in Erie, Crawford counties

Round up the children, find that plastic pumpkin (or repurpose an old pillowcase), stock the wagon with beverages: It's almost time for trick-or-treating in northwest Pennsylvania. Little ghouls and boos can't wait to dress up and hike the neighborhood, collecting a month's worth of candy and a lifetime of memories.

According to the National Retail Federation, revelers will put their money where their teeth were this year, planning to spend a record $12.2 billion on the holiday, beating the 2022 record of $10.6 billion. Those fun-sized morsels come from an annual survey conducted by Prosper Insights & Analytics.

The survey also found a record 73% of people will participate in Halloween-related activities this year, up from 69% in 2022, and, while more adults are getting into the act, trick-or-treaters have always made the popular holiday an all-ages event.

While most regional communities are welcoming little Spider-people and princesses, to say nothing of their furry friends dressed as pumpkins and hot dogs on Oct. 31 from 6 to 8 p.m., a few communities are planning activities on different days.
