Mackenzie Davis (Halt and Catch Fire) and Caitlin FitzGerald (Masters of Sex) play actresses who travel north from Los Angeles to Big Sur for a weekend vacation in Always Shine, a twisty, psychological drama from actress-turned-director Sophia Takal.

“Actresses are not only frequently victims to notions of supposed femininity, but they represent to the world how women are expected to behave and what they are supposed to look like,” says Takal, whose own acting credits include Joe Swanberg’s All the Light in the Sky and the first V/H/S film. “Always Shine is a movie about the effect that the more superficial aspects of our society — our celebrity obsession, our focus on physical beauty, the prohibitive gender roles we assign — can have on a woman’s psyche. I wanted to make a film that was entertaining and suspenseful while taking a critical look at these issues.”

Always Shine will receive its world premiere at Bow Tie Chelsea Cinemas in New York on April 15 as part of the Tribeca Film Festival. You can see an exclusive clip from the film above.
