Following a year-long US tour, Trevor Noah is releasing his long-awaited Netflix comedy special this month — and the first trailer arrived on Monday, just hours after the special was nominated for a Golden Globe Award. Trevor Noah: Where Was I premieres Dec. 19 and marks Noah’s fourth comedy special on the streamer. Filmed at the Fox Theater in Detroit, the special delves into foreign national anthems and the cultural norms Noah experienced during his globetrotting ventures.

In the trailer, Noah talks about losing his luggage in Paris and struggling to understand a rambling French translator trying to assist him.

“Let’s try French,” Noah cracks after failing to comprehend the translator’s broken English. “Let’s see what happens.”

Trevor Noah: Where Was I earned a nomination in the newly-created Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television category at the 2024 Golden Globe Awards. The former Daily Show host will compete against fellow comics Ricky Gervais, Chris Rock, Amy Schumer, Sarah Silverman, and Wanda Sykes for the award.

The comic took over for Jon Stewart at The Daily Show in 2015, and despite having little knowledge of American politics at the onset, Rolling Stone’s CT Jones writes, “the Daily Show host charted the show from a global perspective, allowing Noah to imbue his comedy with an earnest intent to see the good in others.” After bidding his farewell as host in September 2022, long-time Daily Show correspondent Roy Wood Jr. vied for the role until stepping down from the Comedy Central show in October (Hasan Minhaj was also a top contender before a New Yorker report revealed the comedian had lied in his stand-up shows).

In January, the South African comedian embarked on his North American stand-up tour, Off the Record, and added additional stops like Dallas, Seattle, and San Diego for the new year. Noah also hosted the Grammy Awards for a third time in February, making him and LL Cool J the only Grammys host to lead three or more separate years of ceremonies.

His earlier Netflix stand-up specials include I Wish You Would, Son of Patricia, and Afraid of the Dark. The new special is directed by David Paul Meyer (The Daily Show) and executive produced by Sanaz Yamin, Bob Bain, Norman Aladjem, Derek Van Pel, and Noah himself.
