Trevor Noah to leave 'The Daily Show' after seven years as host: 'My time is up'

Trevor Noah shocked the studio audience and television viewers alike Thursday on The Daily Show With Trevor Noah Thursday, by announcing that he will soon be stepping down as host of the show, a decision apparently prompted by a conversation with correspondent Roy Wood Jr..

“I was chatting to Roy Wood Jr. yesterday when we finished the show, and he reminded me that it has been seven years since we started The Daily Show With Trevor Noah,” Noah said, later adding, “I just found myself filled with gratitude for the journey. It’s been absolutely amazing. It’s something that I never expected. And I found myself thinking, throughout the time, you know, everything we’ve gone through. The Trump presidency, the pandemic. Just the journey of, you know, the more pandemic. And I realized that after the seven years, my time is up.”

Roy Wood Jr. responded to his part in the decision in a series of tweets, one of them reading, “Note to self, NEVER remind ya homeboy about the 7 yr work anniversary.”

TREVOR NOAH: I found myself thinking throughout the time, you know, everything we've gone through, the Trump presidency, the pandemic, just the journey of the more pandemic. And-- and I realized that after the seven years, my time is up.

- Roy Wood Jr. immediately took to Twitter to express his regret for bringing up how long they'd been on the show, tweeting, "Not to self, NEVER remind ya homeboy about the 7yr work anniversary." But while Wood Jr. feels responsible, there's more to it than that conversation.

TREVOR NOAH: I spent two years in my apartment, not on the road. Stand-up was done. And-- and when I got back out there again, I realized there's another part of my life that I want to-- want to carry on exploring.

- Fans sent Noah well-wishes following his announcement with one fan tweeting, "A bittersweet reminder that nothing lasts forever. I will miss Trevor Noah as the host of The Daily Show, and I wish him the best of luck going forward." Another fan wrote, "Thank you for 7 years of comedy and social commentary, Trevor Noah. I wish you the best of luck on your next endeavor." But while Noah expressed gratitude, he said he's not going anywhere quite yet.

TREVOR NOAH: I couldn't have done it without you and I wouldn't have wanted to do it without you. And so we'll figure out the timings and the winds. You know, we'll still be here for the time being. But all I can say is, thank you very much. You've truly made this. You've truly made this.
