This 'Treehouse Hotel' Is Opening Next Year in a California Town You've Never Heard Of

The 254-room hotel in California's Bay Area will have secret nooks and other elements reminiscent of childhood playfulness.

Combining childlike wonder and high-tech innovation may not seem like an obvious mix, but that’s what Treehouse Hotels is striving for when it makes its U.S. debut in an unexpected location: Sunnyvale, California, right in the middle of Silicon Valley. The hotel will open toward the end of 2023.

“Sunnyvale is the epicenter of the bold ideas, disruptive technology, imagination and innovation that make Silicon Valley an icon and inspiration for the world," said Barry Sternlicht, Starwood Capital Group Chairman and CEO and founder of sustainable brand management company SH Hotels & Resorts, which owns Treehouse Hotels, said in a release. "Every inch of this playful property, from mismatched materials to secret nooks and unexpected artwork, creatively combines the energy and intensity of Silicon Valley's high-tech culture with the simpler, older, more natural charms of the Santa Clara Valley's pre-Internet era."

The hotel brand, which first opened Treehouse Hotel London in Langham Place in 2019 and has another U.K. location in Manchester on Blackfriars Street scheduled for early 2023, was founded on the principle of “playfulness and optimism," per the company's website.

“The free-spirited, environmentally conscious lifestyle brand creatively captures the carefree comfort, freedom, nostalgia and fun of childhood,” notes the release. “Every Treehouse Hotel is founded on the adventurous ideas that inspire a child to build their ‘tree house’ and hang with real and imaginary friends. Treehouse Sunnyvale will fuse the creativity, innovation, and adventure of the dynamic Silicon Valley with the brand's warm and whimsical ethos.”

With that spirit infused throughout, most of the 254 rooms, which will include 21 suites, will have private outdoor space, ranging from ground-floor patios and upper-floor terraces and balconies. True to its name, the interior decor will focus on wooden elements, from the bookcases with sofas built in to distressed tables and ceiling beams. Also included will be “colorful pillows and quirky quilts” to “collectively convey the childlike wonder of taking refuge in a figurative ‘tree house,’ looking down at the real world below.”

Keeping to its sustainability mission, the hotel will repurpose existing buildings, as well as construct a new six-story building using modular techniques that cut down on waste and environmental impact. Trees felled during construction will be reclaimed and turned into nature-themed sculptures by Bay Area artists.

“From hand-crafted accents, secret nooks, playful angles, hammocks and hideaways, and surprisingly placed lookouts, every element of the adaptive reuse project deliberately blurs the boundaries between inside and out,” the company said. “Our design consciously connects guests and visitors both to the region's rich agricultural past and the cutting-edge entrepreneurial spirit of modern-day Sunnyvale.”

Also on-site will be a fitness center, cafe, beer garden, outdoor games, a pool with cabanas, a hot tub, and a pizza oven. Follow Treehouse Sunnyvale's progress here.
