The Ghostbusters are back! Jason Reitman (son of director Ivan Reitman) is following in his father's footsteps by taking on a Ghostbusters movie of his own. Fans of the original Ghostbuster films were intrigued to see a continuation of the beloved franchise, and curious to see what direction Reitman would take it. We did see a reboot in 2016 with an all-female cast, but this new movie will be picking up many years after the last Ghostbusters movie, 'Ghostbusters II,' which premiered in 1989.

The Original Actors Will Be Back

All of the original Ghostbusters actors will be back to reprise their roles, Bill Murray as Peter Venkman, Dan Akroyd as Ray Stantz, and Ernie Hudson as Winston Zeddemore. Even Sigourney Weaver has signed on to play her role as Dana Barrett. Hopefully, this means that Dana and Peter were able to work things out after the events of 'Ghostbusters II.'

Because he passed away in 2014, the only original actor who won't appear is Harold Ramis, who played scientist Egon Spengler. Ramis not only starred in 'Ghostbusters,' but he also co-wrote the original script.

Egon Will Still Play An Important Role

Harold Ramis may be gone, but it looks like Egon will still be playing a crucial role in 'Ghostbusters: Afterlife.' The film focuses on a family who arrives in a new town that appears to be filled with paranormal activity. And while not mentioned by name in the trailer, it seems pretty apparent that this is Egon Spengler's family. Egon, like Ramis, is no longer with us, but his grandchildren seem to be ready to pick up their grandfather's proton pack and fight some ghosts.

Finn Wolfhard Will Be Starring In The Film

Actor Finn Wolfhard
Actor Finn Wolfhard

Finn Wolfhard is no stranger to dealing with the supernatural, certainly not with three seasons of 'Stranger Things' under his belt. He'll be battling ghosts and the paranormal once again next summer. The story looks like it will be focused on him and his sister, played by McKenna Grace, as they explore the paranormal in their new town. We assume that these two are, in fact, the grandchildren of Egon Spengler. Finn's character mentions that the house his family is living in was left to them by their grandfather and that they're currently going through his old stuff. They're about to discover more than they anticipated.

'Afterlife' Seems To Have A Darker Tone

Although dealing with paranormal activity, the first two 'Ghostbusters' movies were marked comedies, and the marketing showed them as such. The films might have been creepy and a little scary, but there was an overall lightheartedness about them with plenty of jokes and witty quips among the actors. The trailer for 'Ghostbusters: Afterlife' definitely did not project the lightness and humor that the previous two movies are known for. If we're to go strictly based on the trailer, right now, it looks like we're in for a much darker, eerier 'Ghostbusters' film.
