Traffic diverted off Hutch after fuel spill from tractor carrying 42,000 pounds of fries

The southbound Hutchinson River Parkway has been closed to allow for cleanup of a fuel spill after a tractor trailer crashed into a bridge Wednesday morning.

Westchester County police said a southbound tractor trailer crashed into the Mamaroneck Road Bridge around 6:50 a.m.

The crash initially had closed only the right lane.

The crash caused some diesel fuel to spill out of the trailer's refrigeration unit on to the parkway. The trailer was carrying 42,000 pounds of frozen French fries.

Southbound traffic will be diverted on to Mamaroneck Avenue in White Plains until the cleanup is finished.

Police said the driver, whose name was not immediately available, will be cited for unauthorized use of a restricted vehicle on the parkway; having a vehicle that is too tall for the roadway; and disobeying traffic control devices. Police noted that all signs, including electronic signs, indicate that only passenger cars are allowed on the parkway.
