Tracy Morgan-Led ‘The Neighborhood’ Spinoff Set at Paramount+

The world of CBS’ The Neighborhood is expanding.

The network’s streaming sibling, Paramount+, has ordered a comedy series titled Crutch that stars Tracy Morgan and is set in the same world as The Neighborhood — albeit on the other side of the country. The show comes from CBS Studios, and The Neighborhood star and executive producer Cedric The Entertainer is among its EPs.

Morgan will play Francois Crutchfield, aka Crutch, a cousin of Cedric’s Calvin Butler and a Harlem widower whose adult son and daughter move back in with him. Morgan previously guest starred in a 2022 episode of The Neighborhood as a different relative of Calvin’s — his younger brother Curtis.

“I’m excited to be expanding our The Neighborhood universe by producing a show with the legendary comedian Tracy Morgan,” Cedric The Entertainer said in a statement. “This new character is the close cousin to my character Calvin Butler, and you will enjoy some of their many similarities. Morgan plays Crutch, a ‘say-it-like-it-is’ widowed father who is challenged when his two adult children and a couple of grandchildren need to move back home, and let’s just say there will be several comedic complications.”

Owen Smith — who previously worked with Morgan on The Last O.G. at TBS — wrote the premiere script and will serve as showrunner for the series. Smith executive produces with Cedric The Entertainer and Eric C. Rhone of A Bird and a Bear Entertainment, Morgan and The Neighborhood EPs Aaron Kaplan of Kapital Entertainment and Wendi Trilling of TrillTV.

“Crutch will be navigating the ups and downs of having his kids and grandkids back under one roof, and you know if I am doing this, there will be plenty of laughs along the way,” said Morgan. “I am so happy to be able to do this with my brother Cedric The Entertainer, Owen Smith and the rest of the amazing crew we have put together.”

Added Jeff Grossman, executive vp programming at Paramount Streaming, “Our subscribers love CBS’ The Neighborhood, so it’s a natural fit to bring Crutch to Paramount+. We can’t wait to see what the immense talents behind Crutch — Tracy Morgan, Cedric The Entertainer and Owen Smith — bring to this new series.”

Production on Crutch is set to begin later in the year. A premiere date hasn’t been set.
