Track and field: Naples boys and girls dominant at CCAC track meet

Coach Bronze Bruland and his Naples track team were simply dominant at the Collier County Athletic Conference track and field meet Saturday at Golden Gate High School.

The Golden Eagles soared above the rest en route to winning the boys and girls titles.

“The result is the process of the kids just focusing on the little things that take care of the big things,” Bruland said. “We got really really good kids.”

After falling to Gulf Coast by three points in last year's CCAC, the boys’ team left no doubt this time taking first place with a score of 243.5 points, more than double second-place Palmetto Ridge (109.25) and third place Gulf Coast (104.25).

Junior Isaiah Augustave shined for the Golden Eagles, taking first place in the 200-meter dash, 4x100 relay and tied with teammate Keylijah Williams for first in the 100-meter dash. Naples also had four athletes place in the top four in the shot put with Levi Mootispaw taking first.

“Every meet, it's just trying to get better than the one that we were at before,” Bruland said. “We tell the kids constantly our thoughts are what's the clock, what's the distance, that's what we're trying to beat more than anything else.”

With nine first place finishes, the Naples girls’ team successfully defended their title with a score of 257, beating out Barron Collier (163) and Gulf Coast (123).

“It feels really great,” Naples athlete Mollie Jean Baptiste said about the team’s second consecutive title.

Jean Baptiste placed first in the high jump and anchored both teams’ wins in the 4x100 relay and the 4x400 relay.

“I kind of saw her in my peripheral vision,” Jean Baptiste said about the final stretch of the 4x400 relay. “That gave me a boost to run faster and that’s what I did, and I felt great after that.”
