‘Toy Story 4’ Crosses $1 Billion, Fifth Disney Film to Hit Global Box Office Landmark in 2019

Disney has its fifth billion dollar movie of the year, as “Toy Story 4” crossed $1 billion at the global box office on Wednesday night since debuting on June 20.

It has earned $421.8 million domestically and is the fifth-highest grossing film domestically of all time. This year alone, Disney boasts “Avengers: Endgame,” “The Lion King,” “Captain Marvel” and “Aladdin” as other films that have soared to infinity and beyond past the billion dollar landmark.

“Toy Story 4” is also the fourth Pixar film to achieve the feat, joining “Incredibles 2,” “Finding Dory” and its predecessor, 2010’s “Toy Story 3” on the list.

Internationally, the animated sequel is still set to debut in Germany and in Scandinavia, but it’s already become the second highest UK animated release with a gross of $75 million, and it’s performing strongly in Japan and Mexico. Overall, it’s the eighth highest grossing animated film globally ever.

All of this is to say that Disney is doing exceptionally well. The Mouse House broke its own box office record of $7.67 billion weeks ago, a record back in 2016. And oh by the way, “Frozen 2” and “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” are still on the way later this year. It could possibly become the first $10 billion studio as some analysts seem to think.

This year only Sony’s “Spider-Man: Far From Home” has broken into Disney’s dominance, slotting in as the #4 biggest earner of the year and the sixth billion dollar film.

The fourth “Toy Story” film comes after a nine-year hiatus to the franchise, but it still earned a remarkable 97% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and opened domestically to $120.9 million. Pixar will be moving away from sequels to their most beloved properties next year, releasing two separate original films, “Onward” and “Soul” in the early half of 2020.

Tom Hanks leads the massive voice cast of “Toy Story 4” as Woody adjusts to life with his new owner Bonnie and the realization that he’s not needed in the way he once was. He finds himself protecting Bonnie’s new toy named Forky (Tony Hale), who Bonnie has constructed out of a discarded plastic spork, and goes on a journey through an amusement park to rescue Forky when the toys get lost on a family vacation.

Josh Cooley directed the film that also features newcomers to the cast Tony Hale, Keegan-Michael Key, Jordan Peele, Christina Hendricks, Keanu Reeves and Ally Maki.
