Tori Spelling’s Husband Dean McDermott Says They’ve ‘Decided to Go Our Separate Ways’

McDermott's separation announcement came as Spelling posted family photos while celebrating daughter Stella’s birthday
Tori Spelling and Dean McDermott are going their separate ways.
McDermott, 56, announced in an Instagram post on Saturday that he and Spelling, 50, are separating after 18 years of marriage.
"It’s with great sadness and a very very heavy heart that after 18 years together and 5 amazing children, that @torispelling and I have decided to go our separate ways, and start a new journey of our own," he wrote alongside a photograph of himself and Spelling, as well as an image of the now-former couple with their kids.
"We will continue to work together as loving parents and guide and love our children through this difficult time," he continued. "We ask that you all respect our privacy as we take this time to surround our family with love and work our way through this. Thank you all for your support and kindness. 🙏
Representatives for both Spelling and McDermott did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment.
The couple married on May 7, 2006, and renewed their vows on May 8, 2010. They share five children — daughters Stella Doreen, 14, Hattie Margaret, 11; and sons Liam Aaron, 16, Finn Davey, 10, and Beau Dean, 6,

In photos and videos shared on her Instagram Story, Spelling and her family could be seen enjoying a day at the Beverly Hilton, where they enjoyed a day by the pool and ate some sweet treats — including a festive birthday cake.

The Beverly Hills, 90210 alum and Canadian actor have weathered various ups and downs in their relationship, including McDermott's past infidelity. Sources previously told PEOPLE that trust issues were a factor in their current marital woes.
"Tori still has major trust issues with Dean. And he's like, 'We moved on from that.' It's complicated and a very toxic and rocky situation," one source said, while another added, "Part of their relationship was never fully repaired after he was unfaithful."
McDermott publicly admitted to cheating on Spelling in 2014, after which the pair documented their life together on their reality series, True Tori. In one episode, McDermott said of his transgressions: "I feel shame. I've never felt shame before."
During an August 2020 appearance on the Women on Top podcast — hosted by Roxy Manning and Tammin Sursok — Spelling discussed the scandal and said that while she's proud she didn't hide her marital issues from the cameras, her young children have been given access to that information due to it being posted online.
"My kids have not seen clips, but they've seen something out there online and my daughter saw something," Spelling said. "It really upset her."
While Spelling said she is "so proud" her story "lives online" and admitted "that's not something you think about in that moment," navigating their relationship after the scandal was difficult.
"My biggest fear in our relationship was I was like, he's going to cheat on me, he's going to cheat on me, he's going to cheat on me," she said. "So when it happened, I was like, 'See, I always thought from day one he was going to cheat on me,' and it wasn't about him, that was about me. I was like, 'Okay, I know I'm not good enough,' that's how I felt about myself and one day he's going to realize that and he's gonna find someone else."
Multiple sources previously told PEOPLE that the pair's marriage was under strain after Spelling posted a holiday card on Instagram in December 2021, in which McDermott was notably absent.
She clarified in the comments that the actor was "filming his new feature film in Canada" when the photo was taken, but a source said at the time that she and McDermott were "not in a good place and have been evaluating their relationship."
"It's been very chilly between them for a long time. They have been through the wringer before, but they've always gotten out of it," the source said. "They've been living separate lives. They will still have family meals and occasional outings, but it's for the kids."
A second source said things between them had "been bad for a really long time, over a year for sure."
"But Tori doesn't want to break up the family," the insider continued. "She thinks the kids need their dad. These are their fundamental years and they've fought to stay together for the kids."

Several years after McDermott's infidelity, Spelling opened up to PEOPLE in 2016 about saving their marriage.
"We're not just still here, but we're bonded and solidified as a couple," she said.
After McDermott admitted to cheating on Spelling, "everything crashed," she said. "We had to start over. We had to completely rebuild."
Over time, and thanks to intense couples therapy and individual personal healing, "we made the conscious decision based on our love for each other to tough it out and work through it," said Spelling.
"It was one of the worst times in our lives, but it was also one of the best times," the mother of five added. "I wouldn't change anything because if we hadn't started talking and opened up those lines of communication, maybe we wouldn't be here today."

Back in April, the 9021OMG podcast host proudly posed alongside her husband and their five children for a group photo at the Omni Rancho Las Palmas Resort & Spa in Palm Springs, Calif.
"Happy Easter xo. Desert 🌴 is magical for all," expressed Spelling in a caption on the sweet family pic on her Instagram grid, while also sharing it on her Instagram Story.
Spelling was dressed for the sunny weather in the photo with black shorts, an oversized bright green blouse, and platform boots. Stella also opted for higher pumps, wearing a pair of blue platform strappy sandals and a pastel floral dress.
Her Easter pics also highlighted pictures of Beau enjoying an easter egg hunt and posing with Easter bunnies while dressed in onesie pajamas.
McDermott, who's also a father to Jack, 24, with ex-wife Mary Jo Eustace, shared the same family group picture on Instagram, detailing in the caption that it was "another wonderful Easter under our belts."
"The kids are getting so big and fashionable!!! I need to step up my game. Hope you all had a great Easter," he added, tagging the resort.
