'Top Gun: Maverick': Patches On Tom Cruise's Jacket Spark Controversy

Tom Cruise appears to be wearing the same jacket in Tom Gun: Maverick as he did in the original, but there's one difference.

The full trailer for Top Gun: Maverick hit the Internet during San Diego Comic-Con over the weekend. It looks to be the awesome sequel that fans have waited 33 years for, so it's understandable that most people were too caught up in the adrenaline and nostalgia to notice a change in Maverick's flight jacket.

But the Internet notices everything, and some eagle-eyed fans have pointed out that the large square patch on Maverick's back has changed.

In the original Top Gun, the patch features a Japanese and a Taiwanese flag. But those have both been replaced in the Maverick reboot with unidentifiable symbols.

So why the patch edit? Fans on social media suspect it was done to appease Chinese authorities and moviegoers -- the country now boasts the second-largest movie market in the world. The film is also financed in part by Chinese Internet giant Tencent, which more-than-likely had something to do with the decision.
