Top Gear Cancelled? BBC Puts Car Show on ‘Rest’ for the ‘Foreseeable Future’

The BBC is pumping the brakes on Top Gear.

The British public broadcaster announced Tuesday that the veteran car show — which airs Stateside on BBC America and was most recently hosted by Freddie Flintoff, Paddy McGuinness and Chris Harris — is being put on “rest” for the foreseeable future.

“Given the exceptional circumstances, the BBC has decided to rest the U.K. show for the foreseeable future,” the BBC said in a statement. “The BBC remains committed to Freddie, Chris and Paddy, who have been at the heart of the show’s renaissance since 2019, and we’re excited about new projects being developed with each of them. We will have more to say in the near future on this.

“We know resting the show will be disappointing news for fans, but it is the right thing to do,” the statement continues. “All other Top Gear activity remains unaffected by this hiatus including international formats, digital, magazines and licensing.”

The decision to put Top Gear on ice comes nearly a year after Flintoff was injured in a car accident during production on Season 34. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Flintoff and BBC Studios reached a compensation settlement of $11.3 million in October.

Top Gear first debuted on the BBC in 1977. It was cancelled in 2001, then “reimagined” the following year. Since the revamp, presenters have included Jeremy Clarkson (2002–2015), Jason Dawe (2002), Richard Hammond (2002–2015), James May (2003–2015), Chris Evans (2016), Matt LeBlanc (2016–2019), Sabine Schmitz (2016–2020), Eddie Jordan (2016–2018), Rory Reid (2016–2019), Harris (2016–2022), Flintoff (2019–2022) and McGuinness (2019–2022).
