‘Top Gear’ Attempts to Photomap the Rubicon Trail

The U.S. version of Top Gear returned after more than a yearlong hiatus, and the gang picked up right where they left off. Hosts Tanner Foust, Rutledge Wood, and Adam Ferrara were charged with the task of photomapping the world-famous Rubicon Trail.

The Rubicon Trail is located in the Sierra Nevada leading into Lake Tahoe. It is notoriously hard to traverse, even in a well-equipped four-by-four vehicle, which is probably why it hasn’t already been photomapped.

The hosts set out in a Ford Bronco, Toyota 4Runner, and Geo Tracker to conquer the trail but soon realized they may have bitten off more than they could chew. With an expensive 360-degree camera attached to his roof, Rutledge Wood tried to crawl over some boulders and ended up rolling his 4Runner. The camera was OK, but the 4Runner sheared off a motor mount and was leaking all sorts of fluids. Ultimately, the 4Runner went up in smoke.

The remaining vehicles did manage to make it all the way, but when they shared their footage with the people at Google Maps, they weren’t enthusiastically greeted. Apparently the footage just wasn’t up to the street-view standards.

Top Gear airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. on History.
