Because “Top Chef” judge and “Last Chance Kitchen” host Tom Colicchio sent two chefs back into the competition at the midway point of the season (Soo Ahn and Kaleena Bliss), that meant the judges were obligated to, at one point down the line, eliminate two chefs to balance everything out. They did just that in “The Good Land,” where the chefs were tasked with honoring Native American cuisine. Amanda Turner and Laura Ozyilmaz were both guilty of overloading their dishes with too many ideas and ingredients, so both had to pack their knives and go. But how did they do when they both had to go up against reigning “LCK” champ Kevin D’Andrea? Watch part one of their triple threat match above, and scroll down to watch part two.

The first half of the challenge was a mise en place relay race. The chefs had to choose one ingredient at a time to prepare. Tom would inspect their preparations, and then they’d move on to the next. They’d each eventually select five ingredients that way, and they would have to incorporate all those ingredients into a dish in the second half of the challenge. But wait, there’s more. The fastest to finish their five ingredients got 30 minutes of cook time. The next got 25 minutes. And the last got a measly 20 minutes.

Amanda won the mise en place race, so she decided to use her extra time to be extra bold: she made a cake with egg whites and flavored it with the citrus fruits she gathered in round one. Kevin placed second and spent his 25 minutes on a variation of French onion soup using chicken. And Laura hoped to get a grilled fish and a pair of sauces done in her tight 20 minutes. In the end, Tom liked all three dishes the chefs presented him with, especially given the time constraints he so devilishly imposed on them. So ultimately he made his decision based on which chef made one teensy mistake. Unfortunately for Kevin, he slightly overcooked his chicken, so he had to leave the competition for good, while Amanda and Laura advanced to next week’s “LCK” finale. Who will reenter the competition for another chance at the grand prize? We’ll find out soon.
