Top 5 concerts this week in Sarasota, Bradenton, Punta Gorda

As we officially enter August and a fresh lineup of local events, including live music, there'll be a wide-ranging selection of concerts to choose from. This week's concert picks kick off with Tim Cappello, best known as the shirtless saxophonist at the start of "The Lost Boys," who comes to Bradenton along with a screening of the '80s vampire movie.

Other notable shows this week include a Billboard Latin Music Award-nominated bachata singer in Sarasota and a "Siberian surf rock" band in Bradenton. And, as often is the case, there'll be acclaimed blues musicians in our area this week, including two rising stars in the genre who visit after recently releasing new albums and receiving national recognition. Famous for his appearance playing saxophone shirtless while performing a cover of The Call's "I Still Believe" during the opening of the 1987 vampire film "The Lost Boys," Tim Cappello will visit Bradenton's Oscura for a night that also includes a screening of the movie. Cappello's career has included touring and recording with musicians such as Peter Gabriel, Ringo Starr and Tina Turner, performing on her songs "We Don't Need Another Hero" and "One of the Living" for fellow '80s cult classic "Max Max Beyond Thunderdome." Cappello also recently appeared on the season two finale of the acclaimed FX series "Reservation Dogs," once again playing "I Still Believe." Sarasota restaurant Latin Quarters, which also hosts concerts by Latin musicians, will this weekend feature Domenic Marte, a singer in the bachata genre that originated in the Dominican Republic. Marte made his debut with the 2004 album "Intimamente" featuring the single "Ven Tú," which earned a 2005 Billboard Latin Music Award nomination for Tropical Airplay Track Of The Year, New Artist. Marte later scored a No. 1 hit on Billboard's Tropical Songs airplay chart for his song "Como Quisiera." 8 p.m. Friday; Latin Quarters, 935 N. After releasing his debut solo album "Dog Bites Back" earlier this year, singer/guitarist Dyer Davis visits our area for shows at Bradenton's Cottonmouth and Punta Gorda's Downtown Kava. Davis has already made a splash in the blues world with his inaugural solo effort, reaching No. 6 on Billboard's blues albums chart and earning a New Artist Debut Album Blues Blast Music Award nomination. Cottonmouth's live music lineup this weekend also includes Louisiana blues-rock guitarist and singer-songwriter Eric Johanson, visiting the venue after releasing his latest album "The Deep and the Dirty" the week before. Johanson's previous albums include 2017's Tab Benoit-produced debut "Burn It Down" and 2021's "Covered Tracks: Vol. 1" and "Vol. 2," featuring blues covers ranging from the Allman Brothers Band's "Midnight Rider" to Nine Inch Nails' "Head Like a Hole," with four of his releases making the Top 10 of Billboard's blues albums chart. Birdrock Taco Shack, Cottonmouth chef/owner David Shiplett's other restaurant and venue in Bradenton's Village of the Arts neighborhood, will also feature live music this week including "Siberian surf rock" group Igor & Red Elvises. The group is fronted by Igor Yuzov, who grew up in the former Soviet Union, seeking out the forbidden sounds of rock 'n' roll.
