Tooley Productions Pacts With Germany’s SquareOne In First-Look Deal

EXCLUSIVE: Growing its roster of international deals, Tucker Tooley’s Tooley Productions has entered a first-look pact with Germany’s SquareOne Entertainment. Under the agreement, SquareOne will have the option to distribute Tooley’s films throughout German-speaking Europe. This follows Tooley’s first-look and distribution pacts with eOne, CDC United Network and Italia Film International.

A leading independent distributor in Germany, SquareOne has been savvy about boarding prestige fare with commercial appeal from the early stages. Recent successes include Morten Tyldum’s The Imitation Game, Simon Curtis’ Woman in Gold, JC Chandor’s All Is Lost and Stephen Frears’ Philomena. On deck for SquareOne are Mick Jackson’s courtroom drama Denial and Aaron Sorkin’s directing debut, Molly’s Game.

“SquareOne has an outstanding track record of becoming involved at the earliest stage and releasing films in an incredibly important and growing market,” says Tooley. “I am thrilled to be working with CEO Al Munteanu and his team as we begin to roll out outstanding content with global appeal.”

Adds Munteanu: “We are happy to be in business with Tucker and his excellent creative team. Over the years he has proven to have an excellent eye for commercially successful films. Tucker has the rare ability to develop, cast and finance unique stories that appeal to both the U.S. domestic as well as the international marketplace.”

Current Tooley Productions’ projects include 6 Below, a modern prodigal-son thriller based on the true story of former Olympic hockey player Eric LeMarque who gets lost while snowboarding in a massive storm. Also in the pipeline are Hunter Killer starring Gerard Butler, a television adaptation of Neil Strauss’ nonfiction book Emergency: This Book Will Save Your Life and supernatural thriller Mary.

Tooley left his role as President of Relativity Studios a little over a year ago. During his eight-year tenure there, the company’s slate of films earned more than $1.2B at the domestic box office and scored numerous Oscar and Golden Globe nominations. His exec producer/producer credits include David O Russell’s The Fighter; Neil Burger’s Limitless; Dear John, starring Channing Tatum; Nicholas Sparks’ Safe Haven; and Steven Soderbergh’s Haywire. Tooley also produced the 2013 summer hit We’re the Millers, which grossed $270M worldwide.

WME Global repped Tooley in the deal with SquareOne.
