After the 13-year wait for 2019’s Fear Inoculum, it appears it won’t be that long before another Tool album arrives. The band currently has a busy tour itinerary ahead of them, but according to bassist Justin Chancellor, the plan is to work on new music once they’re off the road.

Chancellor’s latest remarks offer a firmer timetable for a new Tool record. Last year, drummer Danny Carey told Cleveland Scene that “it won’t take us this long for the next one” — in reference to the decade-plus gestation period for Fear Inoculum — and said that there was “stuff left over from the last one that we’ll develop” and that the band has “head starts on three or four new songs.”

Speaking on the Monday (October 9th) episode of The Vinyl Guide podcast, Chancellor said Tool have already “got many ideas cooking” for the new album.

“We haven’t recorded anything yet,” the bassist said. “But we’re quite busy until after the spring of next year touring. So once that’s done we’re gonna get back in the studio and knuckle down and put some of it together.” The bassist further noted that Tool has already enjoyed “a few pretty decent sessions of writing. So we’ve got all the ingredients in place. We’ve just got to really bang it out and spend that time when we’re not touring.”

When asked whether Tool is sitting on unreleased material, Chancellor responded, “Tons from the last album. We have tons of ideas. But not recorded to the standard that we’d put on an album. Just kind of, lots of demoed stuff. And just tons of ideas that are just stored away.”

Any studio time will have to wait until Tool wrap up their current touring cycle. The band is currently in the midst of a fall North American trek and just announced a 2024 US arena tour, with tickets available here.
