Tony-winner Harvey Fierstein returns to Broadway with cross-dressing play 'Casa Valentina'

Four-time Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein is set to return to Broadway with Casa Valentina, about a group of heterosexual men in the Catskills in the 1960s who enjoy getting together to dress up like women. Problems begin when the men must decide whether or not to go public with their organization. Casa Valentina is Fierstein’s first play on Broadway in almost three decades; more recently he wrote the book for Tony-winning musicals Kinky Boots and Newsies.

The press release announcing the show says: “This moving, insightful and delightfully entertaining new work offers a glimpse into the lives of a group of unforgettable characters as they search for acceptance and happiness in their very own Garden of Eden.” We’ve seen the standup and the dirty dancing, but this certainly sounds like a side of the Catskills we haven’t seen before.

Joe Mantello, who won a Tony for directing Take Me Out, will direct the play, which begins previews on April 1, 2014 for an April 23 opening at MTC’s Samuel J. Friedman Theater. Tickets will go on sale beginning Monday, Sept. 23 on the Manhattan Theater Club’s site.
