Tony Shalhoub Offers Monk Movie Details Ahead Of Peacock Revival

It’s been less than a week since Tony Shalhoub announced he and the rest of the cast of Monk are returning for a Peacock original movie that will give fans a look at what everyone has been up to since Adrian solved what we all thought would be his last case.

Sadly, details are scarce about what’s in store for fans when the “Monk” movie finally comes out. Fortunately, Shalhoub is the gift that keeps on giving and recently told Entertainment Weekly a few details about what they’ll be making in May when production on the revival move gets underway. As expected, the COVID-19 pandemic will feature heavily in Monk’s life.

“It's Monk present day after however long we've been away from him, 13 years now, going on 14 years," Shalhoub told the outlet. "This is post-covid. Monk has been knocked back on his heels because of covid. He's older. He's not going to be chasing down things on the street and things like that. Hopefully (laughs). We're going to have to write to the fact that Monk's older."

Unfortunately, the Emmy-winning actor was unable to give any solid details about the plot of the story other than to promise it has all the “good elements” that made the show such a beloved hit while leaving room for “a few new twists” that are the benchmark of any good Monk mystery.

For those unfamiliar, Monk focused on the exploits of Shalhoub’s Adrian Monk, a detective who launches into more of a consulting role with the police department after the mysterious death of his beloved wife made his clinical Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder symptoms too debilitating for the force. Still, with a sharper mind than most and a cadre of good friends at his side, Monk solved a myriad of tough cases during the series’ eight-season run — including who murdered his wife.

Like fans, Shalhoub thought the thrilling and heartfelt finale, which aired in 2009, would be the end. Also like fans, he’s thrilled it wasn’t.

"I'm really excited about revisiting it because when we ended it, it really felt like that was going to be it," he concluded. "But to have this opportunity to see where we all are [is special]. All of the characters have gone through some changes in those years."

The actor first spilled the beans about a Monk reunion during a sit down with Dr. Loubna Hassanieh for the most recent episode of Unheard Stories: Stories That Inspire show.

“I’m not sure if I’m doing a spoiler alert here, but we’re doing a 90-minute Monk movie for streaming and we’re gonna start shooting that in May,” he said. “It’s Monk post-COVID, so he’s in trouble. We’re bringing everybody back, all of the characters, and it’ll be a 90-minute streaming thing for Peacock.”

With the cat out of the bag, Peacock later confirmed that Mr. Monk's Last Case: A Monk Movie is officially happening. Stars Ted Levine (On Becoming a God in Central Florida, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom), Traylor Howard (MONK, Boston Common), Jason Gray-Stanford (Percy Jackson and The Olympians, The Painter), Melora Hardin (The Office, Transparent) and Hector Elizondo (Pretty Woman, Chicago Hope) will reunite with Shalhoub (also an executive producer). Behind the camera, the original creative team, including creator, executive producer and writer Andy Breckman, executive producer David Hoberman, executive producer/director Randy Zisk are returning as well, promising that same Monk feel for an all-new story.
