Tony Nominations Abound with TV Stars

Tony Nominations were announced, and every theater nerd’s heart is aflutter that Hamilton received the most nominations in Broadway history – sixteen. Our favorite actors from the small screen were also overwhelmingly represented in the nominees, so let’s breakdown the 2016 TV Sweep of the Tony Nominations…

Steve Martin’s Bright Star

The 15-time host of Saturday Night Live has a musical weighing in with 5 nominations. Martin wrote the book and co-wrote the music with Edie Brickell, both of which are up for awards. Bright Star will also compete for best musical, lead actress, and best orchestrations.

Lead Actor in a Play

Jeff Daniels, the former star of HBO’s The Newsroom, has been revered for his role in Blackbird, but he’s pitted against Frank Langella of FX’s The Americans. Langella hopes to add a fourth Tony to his mantel with his performance in The Father.

Lead Actress in a Play

Jessica Lange of FX’s American Horror Story is in the running for her role in Long Day’s Journey Into Night.

But an evil turn in Misery by Getting On’s Laurie Metcalf will give Lange a run for her money. And Michelle Williams, the star of beloved teenage weeper Dawson’s Creek, is also up for her part in Blackbird.

Musicals

Supergirl’s mom, Laura Benanti, received her fifth Tony nomination for her lead role in She Loves Me. In the Featured Actress category, Jane Krakowski of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt also vies to take home an award for She Loves Me. She’s up against Smash’s Megan Hilty for her featured role in Noises Off.

Featured Actors

Jonathan Groff, the star of the HBO series Looking, has stiff competition in the Featured Actor in a Musical category, but Hamilton has already taken Broadway by storm. The Tonys may very well be next.

And Boardwalk Empire’s Michael Shannon is up for his featured role in the classic play Long Day’s Journey Into Night.

Best Play

Lastly, The Walking Dead’s sword-swinging Danai Gurira proves she can also wield a pen as she wrote the Best Play nominee, Eclipsed.
