Tony Bennett dead at 96: From Post archives - When the legendary singer was in Wellington

Tony Bennett, legendary singer, died Friday, July 21, at age 96, just two weeks short of his birthday. Publicist Sylvia Weiner confirmed Bennett’s death to USA TODAY and said he died in New York, his hometown. There was no specific cause, but Bennett had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2016.

In many settings, 20-time Grammy-winning recording artist Tony Bennett would be swarmed with fans. But this week in Wellington, he was just another “Stranger in Paradise.”

Bennett was spotted taking in a polo match with his wife Susan on Sunday at the International Polo Club Palm Beach, a spot where the rich and famous are known to mingle with regular folks as they sip mimosas.

The 91-year-old singer was in town ahead of his Monday night performance at the Kravis Center.

He posted a photo to his Instagram account Monday showing him with his sketchpad as horses trot in the background.

“Loved seeing the polo matches at the International Polo Club in Wellington, FL and got some sketching done of the magnificent horses…” the caption reads.

Bennett is well-known for his sketches and paintings. He told The Palm Beach Post last year that he had done a watercolor painting of the beach in Jupiter, and his paintings have been displayed at local galleries. “The greatest compliment I could ever get is being called a good singer and a good painter,” Bennett said at the time. “I’ve always had a passion for both."
