There’s a behind-the-scenes shakeup at The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

Mason Steinberg, who was appointed head writer in 2022, is exiting the role after a year, Deadline reports. He’ll be replaced by original head writer A.D. Miles, who is returning to NBC’s flagship late-night program after a six-year hiatus.

Miles previously served as head writer of Late Night With Jimmy Fallon from 2009 to 2014, then made the transition to Fallon’s Tonight Show, where he remained through 2017.

On screen, Miles has continued to recur as stepdad Gary in the reoccurring sketch “Ew!,” which throughout the years has featured the likes of Michelle Obama, Taylor Swift, Britney Spears, Ariana Grande, Emma Stone and John Cena. Watch a “best of” compilation below:

Miles also performs as a member of Fallon’s Ragtime Gals, who have appeared on Late Night, The Tonight Show and the recently renewed That’s My Jam.

After leaving The Tonight Show in 2017, Miles served as head writer of ABC’s Gong Show reboot, and was featured in Netflix’s Between Two Ferns: The Movie and the animated series Hoops. He also provides the voice for Fallon’s iteration of Password, which was picked up for a second season in May.

Following a five-month hiatus brought on by the WGA strike, Fallon returned to The Tonight Show on Oct. 2 and avoided any direct mention of the Rolling Stone exposé on the late-night program’s allegedly toxic workplace environment.
