Tonight Show: John Boehner drops out of Fallon appearance

John Boehner drops out of 'Tonight Show' appearance

One day after it was announced that John Boehner would appear on Thursday’s episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, the speaker of the House has canceled his planned interview.

The move comes as Kevin McCarthy, a Republican congressman from California, removed himself from the race to replace Boehner as House Speaker.

“Over the last week it has become clear to me that our conference is deeply divided and needs to unite behind one leader. I have always put this conference ahead of myself. Therefore I am withdrawing my candidacy for speaker of the House,” McCarthy said in a statement. “I look forward to working alongside my colleagues to help move our conference’s agenda and our country forward.”

Last month, Boehner announced that he was going to resign as House Speaker. He called McCarthy’s decision as “surprise,” and said in a statement that he will remain in his post until a replacement can be found.

Thursday’s Tonight Show will feature Brie Larson, Michael Fassbender, and Cee-Lo Green.
