Tommy Dorfman channeled her inner Madonna — and embraced her love of pink — as she stepped out in full sparkle in New York City Tuesday night.

The actress, 31, wore a radiant, head-to-toe pink look at launch event for the new Swarovski x SKIMS collection at Swarovski’s Fifth Avenue flagship store, and told PEOPLE what inspired her to choose the monochrome ensemble.

“I just felt like I had such a plethora of options with Swarovski [and] when I saw this pink and this dress came through with my stylist, I was like, 'I think we're just going to go — even down to the shoes — it’s all pink,'' she shared.

Dorfman wore a floor-length pink AREA gown featuring a bustier-style bodice allover crystals. She completed the look with several pink Swarovski pieces including earrings, two bracelets and a large ring, as well as a pair of sparkly pink stilettos.

The look was also a subtle nod to one of pop music’s icons: Madonna.

Dorfman shared with PEOPLE that she feels most “powerful” and confident when wearing something “fitted” and Tuesday night’s gown with its “amazing Madonna-esque construction” did just that.

“I feel like I'm just reflecting light in a way that does make me feel really powerful," she said.

The 13 Reasons Why alum added that she was slightly worried about the all-pink look after it becoming the color of the summer following the release of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, but she didn’t let that stop her.

“I thought about that, I was like, ‘Am I too Barbie?’ But I was like you know what? Barbie is everything,” Dorfman said. "My kitchen is pink. I'm just a pink girl."

Dorfman catapulted into the spotlight with her breakout role in the hit Netflix series 13 Reasons Why in 2017. After the show concluded, she reintroduced herself as a trans woman in July 2021 revealing that she had been waiting for the series’ end to transition.

"I think if I hadn't booked that job, I would've started transitioning a lot sooner," she told Rachel Bilson on Bilson's Broad Ideas podcast last year.

She played cisgender male Ryan Shaver on the show, and while it launched her career, she said it had other, less positive effects on her identity.

"I think because my work being so tied to my body and like face and like identity, and whatever I'd been identified as, it delayed some of my growth and maturation in my mid-20s," Dorfman said. "I also think I made decisions that were just not aligned with how I really was or what I wanted — but out of fear."

She announced her transition publicly in July 2021, telling TIME that she had been “privately identifying and living as a woman — a trans woman” for a year.

"It's funny to think about coming out, because I haven't gone anywhere," she shared. "I view today as a reintroduction to me as a woman, having made a transition medically. Coming out is always viewed as this grand reveal, but I was never not out. Today is about clarity: I am a trans woman. My pronouns are she/her. My name is Tommy."
