It’s been 20 years since Tom Waits released his concept albums Alice and Blood Money, and he’s marking the anniversary by reissuing each LP on vinyl. What’s more, leading up to the projects’ October 7th re-release, the singer-songwriter is sharing previously unreleased live cuts of songs from the albums. To kick things off, Waits has offered live versions of “All the World Is Green” and “Fish and Bird.”

Though officially released in 2002, Waits began work on Alice with his wife, Kathleen Brennan, 10 years prior as part of Robert Wilson’s play of the same name. The album is full of references to Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, set to an unorthodox chamber of bass saxophones, vibraphone, pump organ, French horns, bass, violin, and cello. “During the ‘70’s, too many of my songs were drowning in strings. I didn’t want to hear another blasted violin,” Waits recalled. “So, we found string players who felt the same way about their instrument, formed an odd, skeletal chamber orchestra and tried to avoid all the old familiar phrases where strings love to play.”

As for Blood Money, Waits’ second album of 2002 drew from the 1837 socio-political play Woyzeck and ultimately soundtracked Wilson’s 2000 production of the piece. “Blood Money is flesh and bone, earthbound,” Waits said. “The songs are rooted in reality: jealousy, rage, the human meat wheel…They are more carnal. Kathleen and I are well suited to this material. She is hilarious, blasphemous and ominous. I like a beautiful song that tells you terrible things.”

The Alice reissue comes on translucent blue vinyl while Blood Money will be available on a translucent red disc. Pre-orders are ongoing. Once you’ve secured your copies, check out the live versions of “All the World is Green,” performed in Milan, and “Fish and Bird,” performed in London.
