Tom Selleck is adding a new job to his already storied resume: author!

The TV legend, 78, will release his memoir, You Never Know, on May 7, 2024, and PEOPLE has an exclusive first look at its cover.

You Never Know finds Selleck taking readers through his “remarkable life and thoroughly accidental career,” doing so “in his own voice and uniquely unpretentious style,” reads a release from Dey Street Books, an imprint of Harper Collins.

“The famed actor brings readers on his uncharted but serendipitous journey to the top in Hollywood, his temptations and distractions, his misfires and mistakes and, over time, his well-earned success,” the release continues.

Selleck will chronicle his childhood in California, his college “jock” days in Hollywood and his rise to stardom in his thirties and beyond as he came of age on screen.

“From the USC basketball court, to a happy accident, to discovering and then embracing the work I love. It's a long bumpy road with some singles, some home runs, and a whole lot of strikeouts," says Selleck. "I figure it's time to share the ride."

The memoir will also recount Selleck’s close friendships with a myriad of A-listers — everyone from “Frank Sinatra to Carol Burnett to Sam Elliott, paying special tribute to his mentor James Garner of The Rockford Files, who believed, like Selleck, that TV protagonists are far more interesting when they have rough edges,” the release reveals.

In fact, the publisher assures Magnum, P.I. fans will be fascinated to learn in the book how Selleck crafted Thomas Magnum as the decidedly “imperfect hero” viewers came to love so much.

The memoir promises to be full of "charm, talent and humor" — all the qualities brimming in Selleck from his time as the beloved Dr. Richard Burke (Monica’s older boyfriend on Friends) to his current role as NYPD Commissioner Frank Reagan on hit CBS crime series Blue Bloods, now heading into its 14th season.
