The late Tom Petty, who famously sang, “It’s good to be king,” had an impressive castle with a history worthy of a song, if not an album.

The Encino, Calif., home where the rocker lived for more than two decades is back on the market for $5 million. The 11,483-square-foot abode features three stories, with six bedrooms and 10 bathrooms, along with some incredible views. Outside, there’s a pool with a waterfall, an outdoor kitchen, and a pool house with wine storage and a gym, among other amenities. It’s all gated, of course.

Petty had the home custom built, and while it’s been renovated since he lived there, the “unique charm of Mr. Petty’s vision remains,” according to the listing from the Agency.

For example, there’s a costume room, where Petty’s close friend Stevie Nicks is rumored to have hung out. Jenna Mattison, one of the homeowners who worked on the renovation, told the Hollywood Reporter that “there is still a secret ladder that connected the costume room to the master suite.”

Some of the history is less charming.

In 1987, Petty was eating breakfast with then-wife Jane Benyo and their 5-year-old daughter when an arsonist set fire to the home. The Los Angeles Daily News reported at the time that the fire was so bad that only Petty’s basement recording studio was left without damage. The singer had to buy all new clothes ahead of an upcoming tour, his publicist told the newspaper.

The current structure was built in 1989, according to the listing. Petty handed it over to Benyo when they divorced in 1996.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, JPMorgan Chase later foreclosed on it. By that time, a party planner had rented the house and held bashes there that didn’t sit well with other residents of the exclusive neighborhood. THR reports that when the renter threatened authorities, a SWAT team came in to evict him.

Petty had moved on by then.
