Tom Holland and Zendaya Rewatch ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ Every Now and Then to ‘Reminisce About Being 19’: ‘It’s Such a Luxury’

Tom Holland recently told Extra that “Spider-Man: Homecoming” is one of the Tom Holland movies he rewatches most. The 2017 superhero tentpole marked Holland’s first standalone movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe after debuting as Spider-Man in 2016’s “Captain America: Civil War.” It also marked the MCU debut of Zendaya as MJ. The two would go on to make an additional two “Spider-Man” movies together: “Far From Home” (2019) and “No Way Home” (2021), both of which hit the $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office.

“Zendaya and I will, every now and then, watch ‘Spider-Man 1′ and reminisce about being 19 and making those movies again,” Holland said. “It’s such a luxury, such a gift, to be able to sit down and sort of relive your youth and watch those movies. I wouldn’t be the man I am today without that job.’

Holland said that he sometimes enjoys watching his past work as “I sometimes think I’m my best critic — I really know what it is that I can do, and sometimes I’ll see something and go, ‘Damn, I really could have pushed more there.'”

Marvel has remained mostly quiet on what’s next for Holland in the MCU. Holland said at a press conference last year (via Collider) that he will only move forward with a fourth “Spider-Man” movie if the team involved can do the character justice.

“All I can say is that we have been actively engaging in conversations about what it could potentially look like for a fourth rendition of my character,” Holland told press. “Whether or not we can find a way to do justice to the character is another thing.”

“I feel very protective over Spider-Man,” the actor continued. “I feel very, very lucky that we were able to work on a franchise that got better with each movie, that got more successful with each movie, which I think is really rare, and I want to protect his legacy. So, I won’t make another one for the sake of making another one. It will have to be worth the while of the character.”

Given Marvel Studios‘ lackluster run at the box office last year (“The Marvels” and “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” both flopped), it’s safe to assume executives are missing Holland and his billion-dollar grossing superhero on the big screen.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige confirmed to Entertainment Weekly last February that Holland’s fourth “Spider-Man” movie was being written at the time. “All I will say is that we have the story,” he said then. “We have big ideas for that, and our writers are just putting pen to paper now.”

Development on the “Spider-Man 4” script was paused amid the WGA strike last year.
