Almost Leaving The MCU
Marvel fans were devastated this summer when it seemed that Tom Holland's Spider-Man would no longer be in the MCU. The rights to Spider-Man are owned by Sony, and it seemed like they couldn't make a deal with Disney, so it was announced that it was likely that Spider-man would no longer appear in the next Avengers film or be affiliated with the MCU in any way.
However, in an 11th hour deal, Sony and Disney were able to find a deal, with Disney and Marvel Studios getting 25% of the profits. Marvel head Kevin Feige released a statement saying:
"I am thrilled that Spidey’s journey in the MCU will continue, and I and all of us at Marvel Studios are very excited that we get to keep working on it. Spider-Man is a powerful icon and hero whose story crosses all ages and audiences around the globe. He also happens to be the only hero with the superpower to cross cinematic universes, so as Sony continues to develop their own Spidey-verse you never know what surprises the future might hold."
A Last Minute Decision
No one is happier about Spider-Man staying in the MCU thank Tom Holland, and he opened up on Jimmy Kimmel Live about the role that he played in keep Spider-Man in the Avengers family. A drunken role.
While promoting his new film Spies In Disguise, Holland stopped by Kimmel and filled the audience on how he was crushed about Spider-Man's exit and how he did everything he could to keep playing Peter Parker like he has for five films now.
Tom Holland Stepped In
He explained how hard it was at the Disney eco D23 after he had received the crushing news.
"We were at D23 and the news had come out and I was obviously devastated. I was really upset. All my Marvel friends were there and they were taking Marvel pictures and I was like, not allowed to be in them. It was awful."
Eventually, Holland sent an email to Disney head Bob Iger, asking if they could have a call sometime to try and figure out the fate of Peter Parker. Hilariously, when Iger did get back to Holland, he was drunk at his local pub with his family.
Just A Guy Down At The Pub
Holland continued:
"My family and I went to the pub quiz in our local town. We're doing a quiz and I'm like, three pints in, haven't eaten much, and I get a phone call from an unknown number.
I basically just said thank you for the opportunity, and then he said, 'There's a world in where we can make this work.' Then there was a bunch of phone calls back and forth from Tom Rothman [chair of Sony Pictures] — he was really instrumental in the process."
Holland admitted that he got emotional and choked up on the phone with Iger because it "felt like it was all coming to an end." However, a deal was made and Holland couldn't be happier.
"We had a really good plan with what we were gonna do with Sony, the future of Spider-Man was still very bright, but it would've been a shame to take him out the MCU. That's where he belongs, and we've built such a strong character in that world, and it would've been a shame to lose that. But I'm just really glad that we managed to work it out."
