Forget Rotten Tomatoes: Tom Hardy's biggest 'Venom' critic might be his 10-year-old son
Onscreen, Tom Hardy plays the immensely fearsome superhero/supervillain Venom, but at home, it sounds like his 10-year-old son commands the power.
Hardy has previously said that his comic-book-loving son, Louis, “was a huge influence on me doing the role.”
But in a new interview with Yahoo Entertainment, the actor explained Louis’s powers of persuasion. “He arm-barred me,” Hardy said. “It was extremely painful.”
Hardy’s son got a pre-release look at Venom, and, while critics have been tough on the film (it currently has a 27 percent rating at Rotten Tomatoes), Louis might have been even more harsh in his review. “[He thought] I could do better. He’s a 10-year-old — he’s not going to lie.”
Hardy recalled that after his son started giving him notes, he patiently explained, “Louis, we finished filming. We can’t go back and reshoot.”
But Hardy found the silver lining in the critique, instead seeing it as evidence of his son’s creativity. “He’s a 10-year-old. They’re really serious about it. And not in a negative way. He’s got really strong designs on sequels and concepts and ideas.”
He went on, “Anything that can encourage somebody to think creatively … is a really special thing. Especially in a father-son relationship, I want to see that excitement from my son. So for me, that’s a huge reward for being involved in Venom.”
Venom is in theaters.
