Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson's Sweetest Moments with Their Kids

The longtime Hollywood couple are parents of four and grandparents of three

Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson have three generations of family to be thankful for.

The Big star is dad to four adult kids: Colin, who turns 46 on Nov. 24, Elizabeth, 41, Chet, 33, and Truman, 27. (Tom shares his eldest two kids with his ex-wife, the late Samatha Lewes, and his younger two with Wilson.)

Over the years, the four kids have become more than just Tom's offspring — they've been his costars and collaborators, too. Colin and Chet have also followed in their parents' most important footsteps to become dads themselves.

Like Father, Like Son

Tom and his eldest son Colin have shared the screen on several occasions, including when they played father and son in The Great Buck Howard. However the Oscar winner's lookalike has certainly established his own career in Hollywood. Colin's starred in comedies like The House Bunny and Orange County with Jack Black.

Colin has also made his name as a TV star. Most recently, he's appeared in Impeachment: American Crime Story and the biographical drama The Offer. In 2014, Colin's performance on Fargo earned him nominations for an Emmy, a Golden Globe and a Critics' Choice Award.

Strong Team

During his marriage to Lewes, Tom welcomed his only daughter, Elizabeth. Unlike some of her brothers, the 41-year-old won't be found on many screens — save for a few cameos she made as a kid in the likes of Forrest Gump and That Thing You Do! with her dad. Today, Elizabeth writes for a number of publications including TIME magazine, The Guardian, The New York Times and the Huffington Post.

All Together Now

In 2019, the dad of four opened up to The New York Times about how parenting his kids differed. Colin (pictured here with his wife, Samantha Bryant) and Elizabeth, Tom noted, were born before his career fully blossomed.

“We have this gestalt understanding because [Colin and Elizabeth] remember when their dad was just a guy trying to, you know, make the rent,” Tom told the publication. “My other kids, they were born after I had established a beachhead in every way. And so their lives were just different.”

Tight Bond

Tom and Wilson welcomed their son Chester, or "Chet," in August 1990, about two years after the couple tied the knot. Their youngest son Truman was born in December 1995.

Both boys (pictured above) have spent some time in front of the camera: Chet notably appeared on the Fox series Empire and Showtime's Shameless, and Truman appeared with his dad in the 2022 film A Man Called Otto.

Father-Son Collaboration

In A Man Called Otto, Truman plays a younger version of Tom's character. During a Q&A about their project, the Hollywood veteran spoke to PEOPLE about working with his youngest.

"Without a doubt, it's special because, you know, I changed his diapers," said Tom. "But you get past that right away because you gotta show up, and you gotta hit the marks, and you gotta do it on time, and you gotta be right there."

Growing Family

Tom and Wilson have three grandkids: Colin’s two daughters, Olivia and Charlotte, and Chet’s daughter, Michaiah.

Quality Time

In 2023, the longtime couple gushed to Entertainment Tonight about their lives as grandparents to Olivia, Charlotte and Michaiah (who can be seen here with the family at Wilson's Hollywood Walk of Fame star unveiling).

“All you gotta do is love those little brats and they’re better than TV,” Tom told ET at the premiere of his film Asteroid City, quickly adding, “They’re not little brats, they’re extraordinary young women. They are extraordinary young women.”

A Mother's Love

Wilson elaborated, “You got to get on the trampoline with them, you got to get in the pool with them, you got to get on the tennis court, you got to do all the sports," she told ET.

Family Business

Having kids in the entertainment industry, Tom offered his insight regarding an ongoing dialogue about Hollywood nepotism babies in January 2023.

"This is what we've been doing forever," he told Reuters, as reported by The Sun. "It's what all of our kids grew up in. We have four kids — they're all very creative, they're all involved in some brand of storytelling."

The Cast Away star continued, "And if we were a plumbing-supply business or if we ran the florist shop down the street, the whole family would be putting in time at some point, even if it was just inventory at the end of the year."

Hanging at Home

Off the red carpet, the Hanks family spends quality time together like any normal family, especially when they root for their favorite sports teams. In 2014, Colin shared a photo of his home squad looking intense as they watched the World Cup.

"Let's Go USA!!!" Colin wrote in his Instagram caption.
