Many wondered how wise it was to let Ricky Gervais loose on the Golden Globes hosting gig again.

Now the Hollywood Foreign Press, the body which organises the annual awards show, may have Tom Hanks to answer to.

While listening to Mr Gervais riff on Jeffrey Epstein, Leonardo DiCaprio's dating habits, and calling Joe Pesci 'Baby Yoda', buttocks clenched all around the Beverly Hilton.

But when the camera panned to an open-mouthed Ton Hanks, he seemed to be articulating what we were all thinking.

Gervais was barely a minute into proceedings when he made a joke about arriving in a limo with a licence plate made by Felicity Huffman.

Huffman was, of course, briefly jailed last year after being caught up in a university admissions cheating scandal.

“It’s her daughter I feel sorry for. That must be the most embarrassing thing that’s happened to her, and her dad was in Wild Hogs,” he went on.

Other highlights included:

“You say you're woke... if ISIS started a streaming service, you'd all call your agents.”

“Many talented people of colour were snubbed in major categories. Unfortunately, there's nothing we can do about that. The Hollywood Foreign Press are all very, very racist.”

“We were going to do an 'In memoriam' this year, but when I saw the list of people who had died, it wasn't diverse enough.”

And we won't even repeat the joke about Dame Judi Dench.

“Let’s have a laugh — at your expense, shall we? Remember, they’re just jokes,” he added. “We’re all going to die soon, and there’s no sequel.”

Amen.
