Tom Hanks' new movie is skipping cinemas and arriving on Apple TV+
Tom Hanks' World War II movie Greyhound will skip cinemas and head to Apple TV+.
The news arrives via Deadline, and despite the big screens of the world still largely shut at the moment thanks to the coronavirus pandemic, it's still something of a surprise move and marks Apple TV+'s most high-profile film acquisition so far.
Other Sony Pictures titles to follow the same fate recently and move to streaming include comedy An American Pickle and Charm City Kings, although both of those films are heading to HBO Max.

Greyhound had originally been scheduled for a May 8 release date, but was then pushed back to June 12, before an indefinite delay.
Unlike those awaiting Ghostbusters: Afterlife and comic book adaptation Morbius, which have both jumped from this summer to next spring on the cinematic calendar, the streaming service route gives Hanks fans a great chance to see him in action earlier than expected.

An official synopsis for the movie reads: "During the early days of the United States' involvement in World War II, an international convoy of 37 Allied ships, led by Commander Ernest Krause [Hanks], crosses the treacherous North Atlantic while being hotly pursued by a wolfpack of German U-boats."
Alongside Hanks, Greyhound also stars Elisabeth Shue, Rob Morgan and Line of Duty favourite Stephen Graham. It's directed by Get Low's Aaron Schneider.
Greyhound will be available on Apple TV+.
