For his next mission, Tom Cruise is set to team with two-time Best Director winner Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu on a new project that Warner Bros. will distribute.

The news, first reported by Deadline on Thursday, comes after Cruise signed a deal with the studio earlier this year to “develop original and franchise theatrical films” starring the actor.

At the moment, no actual details about the film’s plot or subject are known publicly, but Deadline reported Cruise and Inarritu hit it off after meeting with each other to discuss the project.

Cruise has worked with some of the greatest filmmakers of all time in his legendary career, including Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, Ridley Scott, Tony Scott, Oliver Stone, Barry Levinson, Sydney Pollack, Brian De Palma, Cameron Crowe, Michael Mann, Stanley Kubrick, and Paul Thomas Anderson. But over the last several years, Cruise has focused his screen work on franchises like “Mission: Impossible” and “Top Gun” and other blockbuster science-fiction features such as “Edge of Tomorrow” and “Oblivion.”

The idea that Cruise – a three-time Oscar nominee whose most recent nomination came in 2000 for his acclaimed supporting work in Anderson’s “Magnolia” – had hoped to work with top filmmakers again on non-franchise films is something that has been suggested in recent weeks. Cruise allegedly could also potentially star in Quentin Tarantino’s new film, “The Movie Critic,” but that project does not yet have studio distribution and Variety reported it could end up at Sony rather than Warner Bros. anyway.

Inarritu won Best Director in back-to-back years thanks to “Birdman” (which also won Best Picture) and “The Revenant.” The Mexican auteur has been an awards magnet during his lauded career, winning four competitive Oscars (three for “Birdman,” including Best Picture) and leading 10 of his actors to Oscar nominations. Three of Inarritu’s lead actors have landed Best Actor nominations, with Leonardo DiCaprio the only winner thanks to his performance in “The Revenant.”

Inarritu’s most recent film was the Netflix drama “Bardo.”
