Tom Brady’s Son Benjamin Taught Him an Important Lesson About Masculinity

Every child is unique, and that’s a lesson one celebrity dad had to learn through hands-on experience. In the September cover story for Men’s Health, New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady admitted he wanted his son Benjamin to love sports like he and Ben’s older sibling Jack do — and how “it was hard” for the athlete to come to terms with the fact that his youngest son marches to the beat of his own drum.

In the interview, Brady explained that his oldest son John “Jack” Edward Thomas (whose mother is ex Bridget Moynahan) takes after his athletic dad. “Jack wants to try hard, and he never wants to disappoint his dad,” Brady told Men’s Health, adding that the nearly-12-year-old boy “loves sports.” These traits apparently run in the family, with Brady saying, “I’d wake up early on the weekends to do stuff with my dad. That’s why I didn’t party a lot. If Dad wanted to golf, I wanted to be there with him. And if I ever missed those things, it would crush me.”

Benjamin, on the other hand… Well, despite Brady’s initial assumptions, the 9-year-old isn’t shaping up to be “just like Jack.” Not that Brady didn’t try. “I was like, ‘C’mon, let’s do this.’ And he was like, ‘Nope.’ And I was like, ‘What? No, do this!’”Brady recalled. It was then that Brady’s wife, Gisele Bündchen stepped in, telling him, “Would you effing understand that your son is different?”

It might have taken him a minute, but Brady did get a handle on things. He said, “It was hard for me. I was like, ‘What do you mean? He’s a boy; he should do all the things that I do.’” Once Brady started appreciating Benjamin for the things that make him unique, the two really began to click. “The reality is that Benny just likes different things. And it’s great because now I just have to go do what he wants to do. When we do that, we have the best time. He’s like, ‘OMG, Dad, you’re so funny.’ He loves joking, and I joke back,” Brady said.

As for Brady and Bündchen’s 6-year-old daughter Vivian Lake, it seems as though she’ll probably be a good counterbalance to her brothers. “Jack is just like me, he holds a lot in. Benny lets it all out. Vivi, she doesn’t care,” Brady said of his laid-back little girl. “They’re going to be their own selves, not who you want them to be.”
