Tom Brady has spoken out (again) about how his Netflix roast impacted his family. And this time, we’re scratching our heads and prepping ourselves to write a joke of our own. ICYMI: The twice-retired NFL quarterback was the star of a recent Netflix roast wherein he was made fun of.

Made fun of quite a lot, actually. As, ya know, is known to happen at roasts.

And while he has been mostly gracious about the whole situation, taking the jokes in stride, he’s been terribly “woe is me” when it comes to the jokes surrounding his kids and his ex-wives Bridget Moynahan and Gisele Bündchen. It’s like it never crossed his mind that his family would be brought into this. As if marital problems and parenting t(w)eens isn’t fodder for comedy.

“I liked when the jokes were about me. I thought they were so fun,” he said on The Pivot Podcast, clearly gearing up for a big “But!”

And can I just pause for a moment to remind people that the roast happened live more than a week ago. Which is basically a decade in pop culture years. It was before the Met Gala and was kind of lost in all that coverage. And you could argue that Kim Kardashian actually got the worst of it. (Both the roast and the Gala.) But Brady is still bringing up this supposed source of angst even though the jokes could be slipping from people’s minds as we speak,

“I didn’t like the way they affected my kids,” the former football star said. “It’s the hardest part about —like the bittersweet aspect of when you do something that you think is one way and then all of a sudden you realize I wouldn’t do that again because of the way that it affected actually the people that I care about the most in the world.”

Umm … Brady … do you understand what bittersweet means? Do you know how people usually use it? Retiring would have been bittersweet (the first and second time). And do you understand how easily we could make a joke about a jock misusing a word?

It sounds like the Super Bowl winner is regretting putting himself in a position where all of Hollywood can air his family’s dirty laundry. Certainly his kids Jack, 16, Benjamin, 14, and Vivian, 11 have gotten some heat for it (or at least just embarrassed). And we really do hate to hear that. But he had to have known this would happen going into it.

Or maybe not …

“Sometimes you’re naive,” he said. “You don’t know. When I signed up for that…I love when people are making fun of me … I just want to laugh. I wanted to do the roast because [comedian] Jeff Ross became somebody I knew. But you don’t see the full picture all the time.”

Ultimately, he said the event was a “good lesson” for him as a parent.

“I’m going to be a better parent as I go forward because of it,” he said. “At the same time, I’m happy everyone who was there had a lot of fun. If we’re not laughing about things, we’re crying.”

“We should have more fun.”

Well, if he wants to have fun, laugh, and keep his kids out of the spotlight, all the power to him. We can definitely respect that. As long as he also learns how to use “bittersweet” too.
