Tom Brady’s first roast will likely be his last.

During an appearance on “The Pivot Podcast,” the retired quarterback revealed that some of the jokes made during his recent Netflix roast poorly affected his children and that he wouldn’t sign up to do it again. While he didn’t specify the jokes in question, many of the comedians who took the stage targeted his high-profile marriage and divorce to Gisele Bündchen, with whom he has two kids. (Brady also has a third child with Bridget Moynahan.)

“I liked when the jokes were about me. I thought they were so fun,” he said on the podcast. “I didn’t like the way they affected my kids. It’s the hardest part about… like the bittersweet aspect of when you do something that you think is one way and then all of a sudden you realize ‘I wouldn’t do that again’ because of the way that it affected the people that I care about the most in the world.”

Brady said that going through the ordeal “makes you, in some ways, a better parent.”

“Sometimes you’re naive. You don’t know. When I signed up for that… I love when people are making fun of me,” he continued. “I always said when I was going through the Deflategate stuff that I watched three things on TV: Premiere League soccer, golf and comedy shows. Every time I turned on SportsCenter, it was like, ‘Are you f–king kidding me?’ I just want to laugh. I wanted to do the roast because Jeff Ross became somebody I knew. But you don’t see the full picture all the time.”

He added that sitting in Netflix’s hot seat was “a good lesson for me.”

“I’m going to be a better parent as I go forward because of it,” he said. “At the same time, I’m happy everyone who was there had a lot of fun. If we’re not laughing about things, we’re crying. We should have more fun. What do we love? We love laughing in the locker room. Let’s do more of that and love each other and celebrate other people’s success.”

The Roast of Tom Brady was one of the headlining events of the Netflix Is a Joke festival. It was hosted by Kevin Hart and roast master Jeff Ross, and featured comedians Nikki Glaser, Tom Segura, Andrew Schulz, Bert Kreischer, Tony Hinchcliffe and Sam Jay. Brady’s former teammates Julian Edelman, Rob Gronkowski and Drew Bledsoe also participated in the public skewering. In addition, Will Ferrell stopped by to revive his Ron Burgundy character from the Anchorman films and deliver some expertly executed jabs at the NFL icon.

Did some of the roast’s jokes go too far? Sound off in the comments.
