Tom Brady's Funny Reaction to His Trading Card Selling for $400k: 'I’m Cleaning Out My Basement!'

In the unlikely event that Tom Brady ever finds himself low on cash, he’ll have plenty of memorabilia to sell in order to get back on his feet — and if the price of his rookie trading card gives any indication, he’ll be swimming in riches in no time.

This week, a rare football card from the New England Patriots quarterback’s first season in the NFL made history after it was sold for $400,100 at auction by PWCC Marketplace and eBay. Only 100 copies of the card have ever been produced, while just two of them have received a Beckett Grading Service grade nine, which means it is in mint condition, according to PWCC.

The purchase price of Brady’s card made headlines, and it didn’t take long for the legendary quarterback to catch wind of it. In a post to his Instagram Story on Wednesday, Brady, 41, screenshotted a Business Insider article about the card and included a hilarious response.

“You know I’m cleaning out my closet today!” wrote Brady, who included a series of laughing emojis in the post.

There’s no telling how many items from his two-decade-long career Brady has stashed away, but it would undoubtedly fetch ungodly amounts of money on the auction block.

Brady, who is married to supermodel Gisele Bündchen, has won six Super Bowls in nine tries since his first one in 2002, all while under the stewardship of his longtime coach, Bill Belichick. It’s an unprecedented feat that arguably makes Brady the greatest quarterback of all time.

That’s why it’s no wonder why a rare trading card of Brady would fetch a high price in an online bidding war.

“This sale was record-setting but also largely predicted,” PWCC Marketplace CEO Brett Huigens told ESPN in a statement about the record-setting purchase. “The trading card market is rapidly maturing among tangible asset investors and record prices are becoming increasingly frequent, especially among the market’s most desired issues.”

“This auction event featured the finest football card we’ve brokered in our 20-year history and achieved the highest-ever hammer price for a football card,” Huigens added.

Meanwhile, Brady has been celebrating his Super Bowl LIII win over the Los Angeles Rams by sharing sweet photos of himself and Bündchen, 38, to his Instagram page. The couple recently celebrated their 10th wedding anniversary.

“Ten years ago, I didn’t realize how much I could love you and the family we created together. My heart is so full and I am so blessed!” Brady wrote on Instagram. “I know our journey has not been easy, but the challenges we have overcome have made our bond stronger and our love grow deeper. Thank you for loving me, for supporting my dreams, and for nurturing our family in the way that only you could.”
