Congrats are definitely in order because Today‘s Hoda Kotb is engaged to Joel Schiffman! The NBC morning show personality and her boyfriend of six years have taken their first official step toward the aisle, which Kotb revealed to her co-anchors on Monday’s episode. The news seemed to come as a surprise to Savannah Guthrie and the gang, who were overjoyed to hear their friend’s big life update.

The Today show anchor, 55, coyly kicked off her announcement during the segment. “I have to tell you something. A friend of mine, a friend of ours, asked me to let you guys in on a secret,” she teased. I’ll give you her initials. Her initials are Hoda Kotb, and she’s engaged.” Naturally, she then flashed her beautiful rock, informing her colleagues that she’d kept it hidden from them before the show by waiting until right before announcing to put it on.

Jenna Bush, Craig Melvin, Al Roker, and Guthrie all looked wowed by the news, with Guthrie repeatedly exclaiming, “What?!” According to Kotb, Schiffman popped the question over the weekend as the two were on a tropical vacation. While having dinner on the beach, Schiffman surprised his future bride. “He was like, ‘I have something else I would like to say,’ and he said some beautiful things and then he got down on one knee,” Kotb recounted. “Then he said, ‘Would you be my wife?'”

Say it with us: aw! Kotb says she was “totally shocked” by the proposal due to Schiffman’s “good poker face.” But judging by some of Kotb’s recent comments, the two had already effectively committed to a life together. In 2018, Kotb opened up to Dr. Oz about how the couple ultimately came to be a family with adopted daughters Haley Joy and Hope Catherine.

After suppressing her feelings about having children for a while, Kotb decided to discuss it directly with Schiffman — who has an adult daughter from a previous marriage. “I remember I said to Joel, ‘I want to ask you a question. I’m going to bring something up to you and don’t answer me right now.’ I said, ‘Just let it marinate for a day or week or as long as you need.’ He said, ‘OK.’ I said, ‘I can’t hold it in, so I’m going to say it.’ So I said, ‘I’d like to explore adoption with you.’ And he said, ‘I don’t need a day.'”

Swoon, right?
