Today in Royal Etiquette, Explained: Why Does Meghan Markle Have to Curtsy to Kate Middleton?

She may be the newly titled Duchess of Sussex, but as it turns out, that still doesn’t give Meghan Markle a pass when it comes to royal protocol and bowing down to members of the royal family who outrank her.

Case in point: Kate Middleton. They may be sister-in-laws, but when it comes to formal occasions, Meghan is actually required to curtsy as a greeting to Kate, whose official title will be Queen Consort when her hubby Prince William eventually becomes king, according to the Daily Mail. (FYI, currently Will is second in line to the throne after Prince Charles.)

This begs the question—if Meghan has to curtsy to all royal members who outrank her, does that mean she has to curtsy to Prince George, Princess Char and Prince Louis, too?

We’ll just have to wait until the next royal occasion (ahem, George's July 22 birthday) to find out.
